Getting started with Reversi

Reversi gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. When neither player has a legal move, the player with more discs on the board wins; equal totals are a draw. Use the example below to understand a decision. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Try a more deliberate round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your objective

When neither player has a legal move, the player with more discs on the board wins; equal totals are a draw. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Follow this game’s rules rather than another version’s.

Follow these playing steps

  1. Black moves first. Highlighted cells show legal placements.
  2. Place a disc to trap one or more opponent discs in a straight line.
  3. Every trapped line from that placement is flipped.
  4. If a player has no legal move, the turn automatically passes.

The controls to know

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. A new-round button replaces the current round.

Try this example

Black–white–empty can become black–black–black when Black plays in the empty square. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Check the stated objective.

One detail worth checking

A placement must flip at least one opposing disc; simply placing beside your own discs is not enough. Check the rule before repeating the action. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
