Find your footing in Backgammon

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Backgammon. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Begin with the local players mode shown on the page. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

Try a more deliberate round

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Refer to the controls when needed.

What you need to achieve

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

How a round unfolds

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Input guidance

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

Work through an example

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Keep the controls nearby.

A useful caution

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Compare the situation with the worked example. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
